  • Sound is very subjective, especially in a game like AAPG. Your hearing maybe better than others. Hopefully you’re not like me with age related hearing loss.
There are several threads already where people have discussed what they use and what did or did not work for them. Most favour dedicated sound cards with corded, quality headsets. Some will try to dissuade you away from on board sound or USB connections. It’s unfortunate but at present there are some sound issues in the game. Getting a new headset won’t fix those specific problems. So, being able to hear the NME isn’t always headset related.
Presently I use the Sennheiser PC 363D with the included USB sound card module but with the Dolby turned off.
I’m seriously looking into the Razer Tiamat 7.1 Elite Surround Sound Analog Gaming Headset though. (I’m wanting to take advantage of the Supreme FX onboard sound built into my Asus Hero VII Mobo.)
However, I know a Beta tester who swears by his Logitech G930 Wireless 7.1 USB Surround Sound Gaming Headset. I know he hears much better than I do and I believe they’re in your price range.
Try and buy from a reputable store that has a good return policy so if you’re not happy with your purchase you can get something else.
  • Try unplugging that USB thingy, it's bad. Source: Same headset, tested some setups and it's much better without the USB.

Here is the only post you should read. Undoubtedly the players with best audio in the game is Colts, Hyperlite and me at least i've been told. Listen to no one else. We just like to sound ****
    No USB headsets.
Get a sound card preferably Sound Blaster Zx or HIGHER. Throw out the MODULE that it comes with.
Buy headphones that are Audiophile and not gaming aimed.
    1. Akg 702's
    2. Akg 7xxx
    3. Sennheiser 598 or higher [TOS Violation] i'll sell you the 598's i have that are esseentially new..just hit me up on steam or here. I'll send u pics
    4. Beyerdynamic

A lot of players run headphones with 250 or 600ohms. These normally run from 200 to 600 bucks. It is supported by the ZX sound card. Forget Asus soundcards.
That's it. Listen to no one else. Everything else is EQ settings which is easily playable with. Minimize bass and boost the highs.
There is no need for 7.1 or 5.1 Those are complete garbage for this game, or any game to be honest. Save those for movies. AAPG has very poor surround and z axis to begin with.
    My setup is
    • Zx with Akg 7xx <--- low OHMs but it doesn't bother me. I still compete very well agasint colts ridiculous sound distance. Pretty sure he runs Sound blaster zxr with Beyerdynamic DT 880 Premium 600 OHM
    • EQ is set to have high settings on the high frequencies and mid settings for low frequencies.
    • SVM is on

Or you can just get w.e these guys recommend but don't expect to get good feedback on sound in order to have an upper hand. That really depends if you wanna just play or have a advantage while playing.

Audio technicas open back are great and can be had for a decent price. Also run lower ohms so no need for amp... work well with on board if you're not interested in a sound card atm.

Judging that his budget is $100, and the sound card alone is over 100, I think we are blowing his budget.

Alas, this is true. Medusa 5.1 headphones were awesome in
AA2, and really sound and strat was king back then. Windows vista and up did away with true surround sound for gaming (http://forum.americasarmy.com/discussion/4345/3d-audio-in-americas-army-pc-games-in-general#latest) so simulated is the best you are going to get.
True surround sound headphones(5.1 or up) actually make the game very tricky. many times I look the wrong direction because the noise is coming from the wrong speaker. I think that problem may be AAPG exclusive, as it doesn't happen in CS or COD.
Also- the Razer Tiamats are garbage, i tried them and sent them back.
As far as a true suggestion for a $100 budget would be the Audio Technica ATH-M50x. These can be found for around $100 and have great reviews.

I run the beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250 ohms headphones. The difference with 880's is they are semi-open/closed. Open studio headphones are the best for directional sound anything closed/noise cancelling is not good for directional.
For soundcard creative just released an external sound card that is a really good price considering what you are getting with it and its portable! It's the sound blasterx g5; http://us.creative.com/p/sound-blaster/sound-blasterx-g5 It has the same headphone amp as the ZXR which is like 250$ it also has the same headphone amp as the X7 amd X7 limited edition which are both 400-500$ external sound cards. So considering the sound blasterx g5 is only 150$ and its portable is excellent deal. It was also on sale on amazon like a week ago when I checked for like 120 or 130$ not sure if it still is.
What you should look for in headphones:
    1. Open (not closed or semi open)
    2. Wide sound stage: EX dt990 pros are 5-35000hz ...Fatality's are 20-20hz im pretty sure and I am pretty sure the steel series are 20-20hz as well. The steel series are 32 ohms same with fatality's. The only upside for steel series v2 over fatality's is the 50mm drivers compared to 40mm without anything powering them waste of money.
    3. If you plan to get sound card or something with a dedicated headphone amp capable of powering headphones high ohms you should save up for studio headphones. If you plan on sticking with onboard or w/e you got then you should look for a pair of studio headphones that a low in ohms. EX. AKG's or audio technica's.
dt 990 250ohm pro are 180$ currently (would required headphone amp capable of powering them. Could always get them for now and just max out volume on onboard and hopefully they are loud enough till you get dedicated headphone amp): http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-DT-990-Pro-250-Professional-Acoustically-Applications/dp/B0011UB9CQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1460662183&sr=8-1&keywords=dt990+pro+250ohms
Audio Technica ATH-AD900X are 149$ would work for onboard can always get headphone amp in future if you desire) : http://www.amazon.com/Technica-ATH-AD900X-Open-Back-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S331VU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1460662225&sr=8-1&keywords=audio+technica+ad+900
then you have akg 702's which are a little more costly atm.
Another option would be getting Sound Blasterx g5 for 150$ or cheaper and then getting this headset for 20$ http://www.amazon.com/Creative-HS800-Fatal1ty-Gaming-Headset/dp/B002DS4HTM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1460662445&sr=8-1&keywords=creative+fatality
I used to use this headset with a creative xfi-titanium hd after I sold my sennheisser hd558's for like 6 months and also before I bought hd558's i used this headset on old beta audio engine though. http://www.amazon.com/Creative-HS800-Fatal1ty-Gaming-Headset/dp/B002DS4HTM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1460662445&sr=8-1&keywords=creative+fatality
*I would stay away from sennheisser's the hd558's have very small sound stage 15-28hz. However the hd598's have 12 - 38500 Hz sound stage never tried them but IMO there is much better headphones out there for gaming. The sennheisser's that would probably work really good for gaming are the hd650's (Which are 500$...too much money) and up
IMO your best option if you don't want to get sound card atm is getting the Audio Technica ATH-AD900X. Much much better choice than steel series.
    ATH-AD900X:
    -open backed headphones
-only 38ohms - so you don't need a dedicated headphone amp to power them properly but having one would make them sound better most definitely.
    -wide sound stage @ 5-35000hz
    -53mm drivers
Don't settle for the Audio Technica ATH-M50x you will be much happier getting the ATH-AD900X for the extra 25$. Either way though much better than steel series or creative fatality's. The only upside to any creative headset is having a creative sound card which you don't I think by what I read...creative headphones as just made to work good with their sound cards.
  • How did you find the game sounded with your old headset?
If good.. then why not grab another set of Creative Fat4lity's? they're cheap and cheerful (they're only £20 from where I live!), they'll do the job and most importantly.. you ears will already used to them
If my trollery drives you crazy, you'd better put on your seatbelt.

  • Awesome thread that I am going to bookmark. I went from a set of monitor headphones to a USB headset and it's horrible. Nothing beats a nice balanced speaker and direct connection to a good soundcard!
  • For you guys using headphones, what kind of mic are you using?
I currently play with a Bayerdynamic DT234 Pro headset with onboard audio. Sound is decent, volume is good. My biggest complaint is I have absolutely no localization front or back. So if I hear footsteps to my right, could be down the hall in front of me or behind me, I have to turn myself to tell. Any recommendations to improve that?
I have AKG K712s, which do sound better that my bayerdynamics. But I don't use them for AA because they don't improve the front to back localization at all and they don't have a mic.

that is most likely due to headphones being closed as well as 20-18hz sound stage but could also be if you have stereo for windows config instead of 5.1 surround. You want realtek set to headphones...and windows sound config set to 5.1 surround also you want to make sure sound is @ 48hz.
For microphone I use zalman clip on http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-Zm-Mic1-Sensitivity-Headphone-Microphone/dp/B00029MTMQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1460695043&sr=8-1&keywords=Zalman+Zm-Mic1
Also you should definitely be using the AKG K712's with the proper settings. There is the loudness equalization setting or something in realtek use that and make sure NO bass boost is anything similar to that is enabled. Make sure windows 5.1 config is set to 5.1 surround choosing all the option speakers you can but not selecting anything for the last tab the satellite stuff.
  • Most of the stuff said already is correct. couple of important stuff to add.
Higher resistance (ohm) on headphones with the current technology is not important as it used to be. So anything above 250ohm is overkill and won't add anything to sound distance or quality, as this games sound files are not created for that. If we had analog sound for music it could might havemattered depending on source material. A good quality headphone with good sound stage even with 32ohm is enough to get very good sound in Aapg.
Sound stage is the most important factor together with a proper soundcard. The newest on board soundcards are much better as they used to be. So if you have a good and recent motherboard first thing I would do is to invest more into headphones.
The discussion about open and closed headphones is a hard one . I personally prefer open headphones and am really happy with my hd598s but some players also prefer closed headphones cos they like to shot out the sounds from outside. With open headsets sound is not trapped and it's more natural for hearing and feels more immersive. It does not really add extra sound or makes distance longer. But since it feels more natural it does help many players to get better directional feeling.
If you have only 100 as budget you can't really afford soundcard. Just get a proper headphone and upgrade soundcard later.
  • You dont have to overspend for this game as You wont squeeze to much of sound with the high end stuff anyway

I also have a beyerdynamic dt990, its overall a light and really well built headphone, imho it sounds quite bassy, but I don't have a proper amplifier (which I should use).
If you're willing to spend only a few bucks, you might want to try the Koss Ksc75, its a really small and portable headphone which is really comfortable (once you get 'how' its supposed to fit, its better to wear than a regular headset), has a very decent sound for what it costs and also sounds good ingame. The obvious drawback is build quality, the cable tends to get broke after a year or two (unless you use some reinforcements).

Someone asked about microphones. I use a AT2020 USB. I also do match casting and podcasts, so it comes very handy.
  • edited April 2016
I use the microphone that comes with my soundblaster z, it sits on top of my monitor. I also have the DT990 Pro headphones that Colts mentioned earlier in the thread.
You joined the world's greatest army to become a graphic artist? Outstanding!
  • Based on the OP's budget of €100, I think his best bet would be to get a used pair of audio technicas and SoundBlaster Z from eBay. Don't worry about the high impedance i.e. high ohm headphones. I don't believe that they will enhance your sound dramatically for video games and it will make having an amplifier a necessity. Beyers, Senns, and AKGs are also options if you want to give up a little bit of soundstage for comfort and way better quality of sound for music.
  • I use Logitech G930's. Its wireless, and has 7.1 support for movies. I like the sound quality and they are comfortable around my ears where I've had several my ears would hurt after a while of wearing them. These I never have that issue as they cup completed around my ears. I bought them for $150 bucks but they may be cheaper now.
  • I can contest to colts and inV amazing hearing. I was scrimming with them the other day and they could hear farther away than I could. For the first time in my history of gaming someone had the upper hand due to sound. All I have is some Seinheiser 350's and a Soundblaster Z.
So I went to the pawnshop bought a really decent stereo receiver (hoping that it over-rides my soundcard). Haven't plugged it in yet. But I will soon.
